What is the purpose of opening sequences?
- Capture your attention and set the story’s tone.
- It can tell you what has previously happened or warning of what is to happen.
What is the difference between Opening Credits and a Title Sequence?
- A title sequence usually presents the films title and the key production and key cast members whereas the opening credits contain contain more information on who does what rather than just the main actors.
- Techniques such as animation, patterns, freeze framing, fast editing, living action close ups and many more.
Alfred Hitchcock-vertigo opening scene
- As you first start to watch the beginning of vertigos opening scene we immediately see a chase scene as two police officers chase a man. from this we can immediately know that the man has done something to a big enough significance that the police are after him. this immediately sets the tone as it starts of very intense and already viewers are captured.
- Hitchcock does very well to evoke emotion in this opening seen through the intense music playing without creating a sense of urgency and suspense, this easily and quickly creates an intense feel to the film just over 1 minute in.
- Less animation is used in this compared to sky fall and clips are much longer between cuts.
Quiet place opening scene
- As you first begin to watch the opening scene for the quiet place we can immediately see why it is called the quiet place ( everyone is silent and trying to keep quiet ) giving us context.
- The opening scene shows is foreshadowing of a rocket which is then how the boy dies minutes later
- In the opening scene we get to see slightly what the are actually hiding from giving us more information on what is happening making the rest of the story easily fall into place
Sky-fall opening scene
- The sky fall opening scene basically tells a whole story before the movie even starts. It is very animated and uses a lot more CGI than the other two opening sequences but is very effective too give in depth context and helps us know immediately that there seems to be some sort of mystery, murder/death and lots of different intense events.
